Proposed Land Exchange Would Benefit Red Hill

The proposed 2 Shoes/Sutey Ranch land exchange currently under consideration could add over 513 acres to the Red Hill Area. If successful, the exchange would place the private ranch adjoining the North Side under BLM public ownership. This action would preserve wildlife values, open/space, prevent residential development, and preserve the undeveloped character of the North Side. Area local governments and non-profit agencies have submitted support letters or are considering support letters for the exchange. So far, support for the exchange has been expressed by 14 agencies including: Town of Carbondale, Garfield County, Aspen Valley Land Trust, Town of Marble, Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association, Hanging Valley Ranch, Udall Consulting, Eagle County, Prince Creek Homeowners, Eagle Valley Land Trust and Holy Cross Electric. Pitkin County is evaluating whether they will support the exchange. Pitkin County BOCC & Open Space will consider the issue in executive session and open meetings on June 16th. The Red Hill Council submitted the following letter of support. Find out about this important proposal by contacting BLM in Glenwood Springs, CO 970-947-2800.

Red Hill Council Receives BLM's Making a Difference Award

In June 2002 the Red Hill Council was awarded the prestigious "Making a Difference Award" by the BLM. This award is granted to individuals and organizations that "make a difference" on public lands across the United States.  The Red Hill Council is proud to be a recipient of this award. However, much of the Red Hill Council's work would not be possible without the continued support of the local BLM personnel in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.  A special thanks goes out to BLM staffers Jamie Connell, Brian Hopkins, Dorothy Morgan, Jim Byers and the other hard working staff in the Glenwood office.

The special partnership between BLM and the Red Hill Council make the trail system in the Red Hill Special Recreation Management Area available to the public year-round.

Town of Carbondale Supports Red Hill

The Town of Carbondale is another important partner in the work of the Red Hill Council.  Carbondale has long been a supporter of the work of the Red Hill Council.  Many of the town residents make up a large percentage of the 55,000 plus user days on Red Hill each year.  The town also donates meeting space in Town Hall for the Council's monthly meeting the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm.  Council meetings are open to the public.  Anyone interested is invited to attend.
